Launch of PPH MOTTAINAI Pilot Program
JPO Accelerates Patent Applications by Simplifying Filing Requirements
The Japan Patent Office (“JPO”) and seven other patent offices have launched a one-year pilot program known as the PPH MOTTAINAI, which commenced on July 15, 2011. The purpose of the PPH MOTTAINAI is to accelerate patent applications under the Patent Prosecution Highway—which enables fast-track examination when another country’s patent office has already ruled that the claim is patentable—by simplifying filing requirements.
The PPH MOTTAINAI program takes its name from the Japanese word mottainai, which means "a pity" or "wasteful". The goal of the program is to eliminate the wastefulness that occurs when the examination by one country’s patent office is not fully utilized by another country’s patent office.
The patent offices from the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, Finland, Russia, and Spain are also participating in the program.
A press release from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is available here.
