Confiscation of Knockoffs from January to June 2011

The Ministry of Finance Japan has released statistics for the first half of the year regarding the number of knockoffs that Japanese customs agents prohibited from being imported. There were 11,459 cases of attempted import of goods that were in violation of intellectual property rights. In total, customs agents stopped the import of 340,383 items. 90.5% of the cases were for goods from China. The top five confiscated knockoffs were shoes (22.7%), clothes (11.1%), accessories (9.9%), medical supplies (7.2%), and bags (5.9%).
The Customs Law prohibits the importation of goods that infringe upon intellectual property rights. The punishment for violating the applicable provisions of the Customs Law is imprisonment of up to 10 years and/or a fine of up to 10 million yen, plus confiscation and destruction of the goods.
