New .XXX Domain Poses Problems for Brand Owners

Dear Friends,

You have probably heard the news about the new .XXX domain for adult entertainment websites, which will begin in December of this year. You may not have heard that last Wednesday, September 7, marked the beginning of the “Sunrise” registration period.

The “Sunrise B” program allows owners of registered trademarks to block the use of their brand name in the .XXX domain. It is an opportunity for owners of non-adult entertainment brands to protect the reputation of their brand and prevent cybersquatting.

The “Sunrise A” program allows owners of registered trademarks and owners of existing registered domain names to register to use a .XXX domain before the first-come, first-served General Availability period. Doing so will prevent cybersquatting.

The “Sunrise” program’s deadline is October 28. Prices vary depending on the domain name registrar.
